Those who have visited Shimla by toy train from kalka will know the fantastic experience rather than reaching shimla by any other mean. Toy Train is absolutely best way to reach Shimla. Tracks are small called meter gauge started by British Government in 1903.
The distance is 96 KM from Kalka to Shimla and The Train goes through 102 tunnels and approx 800 bridges. There are few stations in between. Kalka is at a height of 650 meter and Shimla at 2000 meter from sea level. Kalka–Shimla Railway is now officially declared by UNESCO as world heritage.
It takes 5 hours to reach Shimla from Kalka. You get free tea and breakfast in train specially in Shivalik Deluxe Express. Speed of train is too slow due to steep rise in track. But overall it is fun. you see beautiful valley and mountains in your journey. Try sitting the right side in the Train.
Around 11 pm you will reach Shimla (if train is on time). So you get enough time to hunt for the right hotel to stay. Again you need to find the hotel on you own if you have not booked any from Internet. and also it is not recommended unless you have good budget or contact in Shimla.
